This job is located in the Housing and Community Development Division of the Planning Department with The City of Oklahoma City and is under the direction of an immediate supervisor. Assistant Planner is an entry-level professional classification that requires previously acquired skills in research, verbal and written communication. This position will work collaboratively with residents and community partners to assist in the development and implementation of innovative neighborhood revitalization strategies and programs, known as the Strong Neighborhood Initiative. The position will also assist in grant management and compliance as appropriate. Essential job functions include: conducting research in specific or varied project areas and compiling, computing, and presenting planning data according to specified standards and formats. Assistant Planner’s participate in using, interpreting, and preparing maps, plans, charts, or other graphic illustrations. Employees of this classification also write project-related reports and prepare working papers and other correspondence. Assistant Planners are responsible for assisting in the presentation of formal and technical reports and working papers. Work products are subject to frequent review by a supervisor.

Departmental Preferences

Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Geography, Public Policy/Administration, Sociology or related field.

Experience working directly with residents and community partners developing strategies/programs to revitalize distressed neighborhoods by improving overall economic and social health, appearance, accessibility and safety of neighborhoods.

Experience in community engagement, public meetings, and facilitation.

Experience in Geographic Information Systems and data analysis.

Experience in presentation and design software such as InDesign and SketchUp

Experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.
