The City of Lafayette (pop. 24,000) is recruiting for the position of Transportation Planner. Lafayette prides itself on its vibrant downtown, beautiful tree-studded hillsides and great schools. This position will be part of the team that ensures that Lafayette retains its semi-rural character and “small town” downtown feel.

The Transportation Planner participates in a wide range of local and regional projects related to policies and planning for effective multi-modal circulation and parking. The position staffs the Circulation Commission, researches grants, writes proposals, and coordinates with regional agencies to make recommendations for traffic mitigation measures. The position is also responsible for advising the Commission on issues that impact pedestrians and bicycles.

This is a challenging job in a great city! The new Transportation Planner will be joining a long-tenured staff of dedicated, energetic and fun professionals.

The City is seeking a high energy professional who is tactful, self-motivated, creative, and detail-oriented. Exceptional analytical and communication skills and the ability to write well and persuasively are required. An understanding of the regional political infrastructure and how it affects policy development and implementation is highly desirable. The candidate should have a four-year degree with an emphasis on transportation planning, traffic engineering or civil engineering supplemented by coursework in urban planning, community development, business or public administration, and five years professional experience in a similar field.

The Transportation Planner is part of the Engineering Services Department and performs the following major duties:

• Provides professional analyses and recommendations on complex transportation and traffic issues, ranging from long-range planning studies to short-term actions.

• Staffs the Circulation Commission and Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee, including agenda preparation, public notice, staff reports and review of minutes.

• Oversees consultant work on transportation planning projects and studies. Reviews and analyzes development applications, identifies and recommends impact mitigation conditions to conform with law, established policies, and plans.

• Researches and identifies grant funding sources, writes proposals and applications, assists in programming and administering grant awards.

• Represents Lafayette in coordination with regional agencies, such as committees of the Contra Costa Transportation Authority (CCTA); advocates Lafayette’s interests in regional issues.

The final filing date is November 28, 2014. To be considered, you must submit a City of Lafayette Employment Application, plus relevant materials that amplify your qualifications.
