Caltrans has become a great place to effect change statewide (and inspire change beyond!), and I am excited to share the posting of another key change-agent role. The Office Chief of Data and Analytics Services is particularly exciting because Caltrans is pivoting to lean more heavily on quantitative metrics to guide planning and project selection. The central goal is to show which investments will best achieve Caltrans goals of bettering climate, equity, health, environment, safety, and access to opportunity, and there is ample support from executive management for substantial change from past practice. We are gearing up to procure a big data platform, revise our approach on cost-benefit analysis, and examine our use of travel demand and microsimulation modeling, while scanning the horizon for new quantitative assessment tools—all to be led by this office. This role oversees three branches: Data & Geospatial Management, Statewide Modeling, and Transportation Economics. The ideal candidate would have depth in data and quantitative tools, a solid understanding of transportation planning and investment and its effects on society, and management experience or aptitude.
