Lafayette prides itself on its vibrant downtown, beautiful tree-studded hillsides and great schools. The Lafayette staff is inclusive, welcoming and fun.

The City Council has recently adopted a Vision Zero policy with the goal of improving safety for all transportation users and particularly pedestrians and bicyclists. Because Lafayette was incorporated as a “semi-rural” city, there are few walkways and bikeways. Creating more active transportation routes and finding source to construct those routes will be one of the main challenges of this position.

Some current projects include:

Providing technical direction for Vision Zero policy projects to improve transportation options for all users including motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists.
Maintaining and supporting transportation programs such as: Walkway & Bikeway Master Plans, Neighborhood Traffic Calming, School Area Traffic Safety.
Processing Transportation Action Requests and managing resident expectations.
The Position

The Traffic Engineer reports directly to the Engineering & Public Works Director and performs the following major duties:

Staffs the Traffic & Circulation Commission, including preparing agendas, providing analysis and writing staff reports, and summarizing meeting proceedings.

Oversees consultant work on transportation planning projects and studies. Reviews and analyzes development applications, identifies and recommends impact mitigation conditions to conform with law, established policies, and plans.

Researches and identifies grant funding sources, writes proposals and applications, assists in programming and administering grant awards.

Responds to public requests for service by evaluating site conditions and prescribing appropriate solution options.

Represents Lafayette in coordination with regional agencies, such as committees of the Contra Costa Transportation Authority (CCTA); advocates Lafayette’s interests in regional issues.

The Ideal Candidate

The City is seeking a high energy professional who is tactful, self-motivated, creative, and detail-oriented. Exceptional analytical and communication skills and the ability to write well and persuasively are required. An understanding of the regional political infrastructure and how it affects policy development and implementation is highly desirable.

The candidate should have a four-year degree with an emphasis on transportation planning, traffic engineering or civil engineering supplemented by coursework in urban planning, community development, business or public administration, and five years professional experience in a similar field. Working knowledge of fundamental traffic engineering principles is also highly desirable.

Compensation & Benefits

The salary range for the position is $91,661- $120,570 depending on experience and qualifications. Lafayette also provides an attractive benefits package that includes:

A generous 401-A retirement plan with contributions up to 20% as well as City-paid social security contributions. Because the City does not participate in PERS, all vested retirement funds belong to the employee to manage as they see fit

City subsidizes 95% of health and dental OR keep the health allowance (15% of salary) if you have alternate coverage.

Start with 11.5 days of vacation + 2 additional weeks paid executive leave for a total of more than 4 weeks vacation in Year 1. Vacation increases with tenure up to 7 weeks paid time off per year.
