We are looking for a Director of Park Projects & Design to join the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy to oversee the next chapter of a program that preserves and enhances public lands in collaboration with partner agencies*. This position supports the mission of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area by leading an interdisciplinary team of architects, landscape architects, planners, ecologists, and GIS specialists. As part of the Parks Conservancy’s commitment to racial and social justice and climate resiliency, the Director also leads the team in engaging partner agencies and local communities in actively working towards a more just and resilient future.

About Us:
The Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy is the nonprofit partner of the National Park Service overseeing the Golden Gate National Recreation Area — 84,000 acres of national parkland spanning the San Francisco Bay Area, including Muir Woods, Ocean Beach, Crissy Field, and Alcatraz Island.

The Projects & Design Department supports park preservation and enhancement efforts of our local and federal partners. We strive for our projects to be grounded in community design, and we are working towards engaging more a diverse cross-section of Bay Area residents in project planning.

The staff and interns within the department provide planning, project management, and project implementation expertise across a rich suite of projects. A few of our past accomplishments include projects at Lands End and the Presidio Coastal Trail. We are excited to bring our current projects to completion, including projects at Crissy Field and Bothin Marsh that have an increased focus on sea level rise adaptation and community design.

Primary Responsibilities:
Mentorship and Work Culture
• Promotes a healthy, supportive work environment.
• Builds a culture of safety and well-being.
• Recruits, mentors, and supports professional growth of a team of 8-12 full time staff and interns.
• Fosters teamwork and collaboration with external departments.
• Leads team’s engagement with justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion work.
Collaboration and Partnership
• Leads the collaboration with six agency partners to identify opportunities and priorities.
• Coordinates regularly with partners to assess progress and address needs.
• Presents at compliance meetings, community events, and to elected officials.
• Facilitates working groups and committees that include internal staff and/or external partners.
Project Oversight and Design Leadership
• Oversees staff leading projects. Provides guidance to team and partner agencies throughout project life cycle (scoping, defining roles and responsibilities, compliance, construction, evaluation, problem solving challenges, etc.).
• Ensures project work aligns with the Parks Conservancy’s strategic direction and capacity.
• Supports team in integrating and exploring best practices for community design, social justice, climate resilience, and communications strategies.
• Works to increase community involvement and participatory design practices in park planning, especially for historically and currently marginalized communities (including communities of color, low income/working class communities, and people with disabilities).
Financial Management and Administration
• Prepares and manages budget for department (approximately $1 million per year) and for projects (individual projects range from $100K – 10 million).
• Oversees development and management of project agreements and contracts.
• Directs work involving consultants, including managing Request for Qualifications (RFQs) and Request for Proposals (RFPs).
• Collaborates with Development Department and others to identify and pursue funding support from agency partners, grants, and individual donors.

Qualifications:
• Leadership and mentorship: Committed to fostering an inclusive work culture; experience managing direct reports; can support others and help them develop in their positions; is willing to address conflict and can respond to the needs of individuals and teams.
• Collaboration and relationship building: Experience in partnership-based work, especially working across multiple organizations and/or jurisdictions; can build and sustain relationships with a variety of people, partner organizations, and communities.
• Project management and design experience: Prior project management and design experience (such as park development, ecological planning, landscape architecture, restoration design, urban design, historic preservation, construction, engineering, etc.); ability to lead and contribute to the planning and management of projects with multiple stakeholders; relevant knowledge and technical skills as demonstrated by work experience and/or education.
• Strategy and financial management: Ability to align projects with organizational priorities and goals; can adapt as conditions change; experience managing budgets and making decisions with financial impacts.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
• Work is performed in office and outdoor settings.
• Position is based out of Fort Mason in San Francisco, CA, with some travel required between offices and field sites in Marin, San Francisco, and San Mateo Counties. When possible, we offer flexibility in work schedule and location to promote work-life balance.
• Regularly sits at a computer station and operates electronic equipment 6 to 8 hours per day.

Compensation:
This is a full time, benefited position. Benefits include medical, dental, and vision plans, up to 3 weeks of vacation time plus holidays, personal, and sick days, Employee Assistance Program, employer-matched Commuter Program, and more.

Target Salary: $113,000 to $125,000, negotiable and will be commensurate with experience and skills
