About the Housing Endowment and Regional Trust (HEART) of San Mateo County
HEART is a nonprofit public/private partnership among the county, the cities, and business communities dedicated to increasing the supply of affordable housing by providing financing for the acquisition, construction and rehabilitation of affordable and workforce housing in San Mateo County. HEART’s work includes providing housing advisory services to cities, school districts and other potential affordable housing developers. HEART also manages a first-time homebuyer loan program for moderate-income households.

The HEART Fellowship is designed to develop future nonprofit management and communications leaders. This comprehensive management and communications fellowship specifically provides people early in their careers with experience in the field of affordable housing financing and development. During the fellowship, individuals will learn about a broad range of functional areas in nonprofit management, finance, marketing and communications management. Individuals will cultivate professional and leadership skills by pursuing areas of interest based on personal and professional goals, as well as contribute to organizational priorities. The HEART Nonprofit Housing and Management Fellowship offers an unparalleled opportunity for career growth in the public and nonprofit sectors.


Responsibilities may include, but are not limited, to the following:

• Develop expertise in the financial management of the organization including preparing budgets and budget reports, reviewing and managing accounting systems and other financial related tasks.
• Direct development of a marketing plan and execution of the marketing strategy, engage with the public through agency communications and assist with public relations.
• Learn to manage contracts and agreements, governmental grant reporting and compliance.
• Assist with securing and managing grants, including preparing grant and loan applications, administering grants and preparing grant reports.
• Assist with planning and running HEART events including annual fundraising event and other industry and public workshops on HEART’s programs.
• Gain experience with written and oral reports, including preparing administrative reports and making oral presentations to the Board of Directors and Board committees.
• Participate in developing new housing and financing programs for the organization.
• Conduct research, analyze data and prepare a variety of reports on housing development.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.


Knowledge or experience in any of the following areas is helpful:

• Principles and practices of organization, administration, personnel and budgets.
• Principles of marketing and marketing management.
• Principles of accounting and managerial accounting.

Ability to:

• Establish and maintain effective working relationships, including collaborating and working in teams.
• Oversee multiple projects simultaneously and be sensitive to deadlines and changing priorities.
• Exercise good judgment, flexibility and creativity in response to changing situations and needs.
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Duration and future employment:
Twelve- to eighteen-month fellowship duration. May apply for a permanent management or program position at HEART upon completing fellowship.


Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major work in business administration, public administration, planning, community development, urban studies, real estate development or a related field.

License or Certificate

Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver’s license

• Up to $80,000 depending on experience
