ABOUT US | HR&A provides strategic advisory services for clients in the public, private, and non-profit sectors to solve some of the most complex challenges facing cities today. We care about improving the quality of urban life, and we are increasingly focused on the challenges of inclusivity, infrastructure, and technological innovation in cities as we advance public-private development projects that improve economic, environmental, and social outcomes.

We are former public servants, real estate developers, urban planners, city officials, activists, and economists. We are unique in our ability to create value by integrating disparate disciplines for our clients, and we often lead teams with engineers, architects, lawyers, community organizers, and other specialists. We are a tight-knit team that works across the country and around the world from offices in New York, Dallas, Los Angeles, Raleigh, and Washington, DC.

THE ROLE | We are seeking Senior Analyst and Director candidates to join our growing team in our Los Angeles office. Successful candidates will have relevant project management-level experience in the public, private, or nonprofit sectors working in real estate, economic development, and related consulting fields; must demonstrate strong analytic and critical thinking skills to serve our clients, both in terms of private investment objectives and public policy goals; and should possess a passion for intelligent urban development and a deep curiosity about the challenges and opportunities facing cities.

Senior Analysts are more experienced analysts, capable of delivering our most complex project work across multiple practice areas and services and further experienced in working collaboratively on project teams in increasingly more complex roles, including managing projects independently. Senior Analysts are responsible for exercising independent judgement in designing and planning work efforts, managing and training junior staff members, and ensuring that our analytic tools and methods are at the industry’s leading edge. A typical day may include complex real estate pro forma development, economic modeling and market feasibility testing, fiscal and economic impact analysis, public-private partnership structuring, public policy and program design, coordination with partner firms, overseeing internal work streams, or the preparation of client deliverables and proposals. Senior Analysts should expect to manage some projects and work directly with clients on a regular basis. Our analytical staff form the foundation of our team-oriented and collaborative structure and help to drive our data-driven approach to city building.

Directors manage the team’s production of client deliverables, including memos, reports, and PowerPoint presentations, support or lead client communication and presentations, and support the firm’s business development efforts across multiple practice areas. Day-to-day tasks will include managing internal and external teams to complete complex real estate and economic assignments including market research and analysis, financial feasibility analysis, master plan development, economic and fiscal impact studies, public-private partnership structure and strategy, and development of critical path timelines to support project implementation.

Both the Senior Analyst and Director positions provide significant opportunities for growth and diversity within the role as individual project portfolios change. HR&A staff are often generalists, but have the opportunity to specialize over time.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED | We are looking for candidates with strong quantitative, qualitative, and communication skills; a passion for urban development and policy; and a deep curiosity about the challenges and opportunities facing cities today. Required skills, aligned with the roles and responsibilities described above, include:

A high degree of familiarity with urban development processes, especially in Southern California and the West Coast;
Comfort synthesizing data and crafting a compelling narrative;
Comfort presenting to internal senior leadership and external clients;
Excellent business writing and verbal communication skills;
Strong project management experience, including professional and interpersonal communication skills aligned with guiding a team.
Our new team members will learn quickly, possess excellent written and verbal communication skills; and be able to manage multiple assignments at once. They will think independently, act entrepreneurially, and pay attention to the details. Ideal candidates will bring a demonstrated capacity for leadership, critical thinking, and creativity. Specifically –

Senior Analyst candidates should have a Master’s Degree, or a Bachelor’s Degree with a focus on economics, urban planning, business, public policy, real estate, political science or other closely related field and three to five years or more of relevant full-time experience in a consulting or another analytic environment related to real estate, urban planning, economic development, business, government, or public policy. Preference will be given to candidates whose experience includes project management in a relevant field.

Director candidates should have a Master’s degree, preferably in real estate, urban planning, and/or business or a similar field of study and five years or more of work experience in economic development, real estate, public policy and/or consulting in a related field. Considerable additional experience in a closely related field may also be substituted for a graduate degree. Successful candidates will be highly motivated independent thinkers with sufficient poise for direct client interaction, with potential for rapid professional growth.

COMPENSATION | We offer competitive compensation packages, based on qualifications and experience. We are an employee-owned company, meaning you will have the opportunity to benefit from the firm’s growth over time through participation in our Employee Stock Options Plan. Each year, the firm will contribute funds to this long-term wealth-building account, and may make contributions to other retirement accounts. We also provide a comprehensive benefits package that goes well beyond coverage of 90-95% of healthcare premiums, dental and vision coverage.
