About Symbium

The key to Symbium's business is Computational Law, an innovative technology based on the codification of laws and regulations in computable form. Just as TurboTax mechanizes the tax code, Symbium's Computational Law-enabled web applications have rules and regulations built right into them.

Symbium’s current focus is on automating land use and development regulations. We make zoning regulations easier to understand, navigate, and take action upon. Our flagship service (build.symbium.com) enables homeowners, local government staff, and design professionals to quickly ascertain if an accessory dwelling unit is allowed on a site, and if so, what site-specific development standards apply and what processes are required.

What You’ll Do

Symbium is seeking a planner/project manager to join our team. Your primary responsibility is to work with the engineering team to configure Symbium’s existing web services for new municipalities. The position will play an important role in growing our platform. We will consider applicants for an internship, part-time, and/or full-time position.

Responsibilities

- Review, analyze, and summarize zoning regulations and related municipal code provisions.
- Work with engineering team to determine which of zoning regulations are amenable to automation and how to surface information about those that are not.
- Work with engineering team to find available open data to support the mechanization of zoning ordinances.
- Draft user-friendly language explaining municipalities’ regulations and permitting processes.
- Communicate with local government staff to resolve questions regarding the zoning code and related processes.
- Elicit, review, and respond to user feedback.

Who You Are

We are looking for people who meet the following requirements:

- Background in urban planning and/or law. Bonus points for zoning, coding, and/or local government experience.
- Passion for making regulations easy to understand.
- Enjoy taking a project and running with it.
- Excellent writing, analytical, and organizational skills.
- Can get into the regulatory details while maintaining the broader product and company perspective.
- Always thinking about how you can contribute and add value.
- Team player who is passionate about being a part of a tight-knit and nimble team.
