Job Summary

The Placemaking Manager will be responsible for the day-to-day implementation of the community engagement and Phase 0 strategies for one of the largest and most exciting urban regeneration projects in the US, located in the greater San Francisco Bay Area. They will be responsible for coordinating the delivery of all aspects of community and stakeholder involvement and coordinating support from team members and external consultants. They will also contribute to evolving the strategy and implementation of the Engagement Plan with project leadership. Engagement activities will consist of a mixture of one-on-one briefings, presentations, workshops, group sessions and fun events with the objective of building trust with broad and diverse groups of stakeholders, engaging everyday local residents, and building innovative avenues for community feedback and ways of experiencing the project site. The initial phase of work will focus on developing robust pre-application engagement in the context of engaging creative events and interim uses.

The Placemaking Manager will evolve and execute on the Phase 0 Plan, the objective of which is to lay the foundation for a dynamic and vital place people will seek out and one that can foster connection, well-being and social life. This includes developing the network of organizations and businesses that will activate Phase 0 beginning in Fall 2019, supporting the project team in the design and delivery of the Phase 0 spaces, and developing the management approach and operating budget for interim use spaces. This individual will be expected to develop robust series of interesting events, create a platform in which to scale the total number of events over time and to build a program that a) reflects the diverse local interests expressed through early engagement, b) supports local cultural producers, and c) brings high-quality programs from elsewhere. The Placemaking Manager will be expected to draw from local, regional, and international talent and potential partners to use renovated buildings and adjacent lots, exploring opportunities to program in adjacent parks, managing the budget, and incorporating input from project team members throughout the process.

Essential Job Functions, Duties and Responsibilities

• Community and Stakeholder Engagement Plan – contribute to the production and evolution of the Plan ensuring that the local community insight is incorporated into plan design and delivery.
• Engagement Activities – coordinate and pro-actively deliver the engagement activities outlined in the Community and Stakeholder Engagement Plan.
• Phase 0 Activation Plan - refine and execute the approach to activation and interim use including identifying and working with local and regional partners and building towards a long-term sustainable program and a scalable platform.
• Community Hubs – be a regular presence at project Community Hubs to facilitate ongoing engagement with the community pre and post application.
• Network – build a strong network across the community and potential program contributors that includes residents, business, non-profits and artists.
• Support and evolve the implementation of the place vision.
• Support the production of the Neighborhood Book to capture how place will be delivered on the final project to enable the whole team to support the delivery.
General Background and Minimum Requirements
• Demonstrated passion for urbanism and placemaking
• Ability to drive projects and excel in a collaborative and fast pace work environment
• Minimum 5 years experience developing, managing and executing community engagement for large scale projects
• Minimum 5 years experience developing, managing, and executing creative programming and activation with artists, businesses and community organizations.
• Minimum of a bachelor’s degree
