The City of Berkeley Department of Public Works Transportation Division seeks to hire a Pedestrian and Bicycle Program Assistant. This 19 hour a week paid non-benefitted intern position will support our pedestrian and bicycle program work, as well as performing other transportation planning tasks as assigned.

The primary role of the position is to support the City's bicycle parking program. Duties include but are not limited to:
- Enter and maintain bike rack and bicycle corral requests in spreadsheet and GIS formats
- Receive and evaluate applications to the City's bicycle parking corral program
- Maintain online “Open Data” GIS map of current and past bike rack requests and installations
- Bike rack and bicycle corral fieldwork/marking locations for new bike racks and bicycle corrals
- Conduct field meetings with merchants regarding locations of new bike racks and bike corrals
- Compile lists of racks and bike corrals to be installed for annual installation project
- Maintaining/updating the City’s specifications and documents for bike racks and bike corrals
- Supporting the installation, inspection, and invoicing of grant-funded bicycle parking installation projects
- Conducting fieldwork assessments of abandoned bike complaints and tagging abandoned bikes
- Maintaining list of tagged abandoned bikes
- Compiling and entering bicycle count data in a spreadsheet format
- Updating the City’s annual bicycle count report
- Maintaining and updating the City’s pedestrian and bicycle program web pages
- Supporting the adoption of a new bicycle parking ordinance for the City
- Providing other intern-level support for bicycle and pedestrian program, Transportation Planning, and grant funding work within the Transportation Division, as needed. Current projects include the Milvia Street Bikeway Project; redesign of City streets as part of ongoing repaving and T1 Infrastructure Bond Measure projects; Pedestrian Master Plan Update; Southside Complete Streets Project; Vision Zero Action Plan; and other transportation planning efforts

Required skills:

- Adobe Acrobat Professional
- Travel by bike, foot, or transit to take field measurements and mark bicycle rack and corral locations
- Communicate clearly and professionally in a customer service environment while meeting with members of the public while conducting fieldwork
- Accomplish a variety of intern-level professional tasks under deadline and within the allotted hours per week

Eligibility:
• Must be a US citizen or legal permanent resident; AND
• Must possess a valid California driver's license if assignment requires driving; AND
• Must:
o Be enrolled full-time or part-time in an accredited college or university in an undergraduate, graduate, or doctoral degree program; OR
o Have obtained a degree within the last twelve (12) months; OR
o Meet requirements as stipulated for an educational, certification, or licensure program.
