Description
The City of Cupertino is seeking a highly motivated individual interested in joining our fast-paced and dynamic organization as a paid Intern in the Planning division within Community Development.

Under general supervision, the Planning Intern assists the division as assigned. This position emphasizes attention to detail, problem-solving, and critical thinking.

Class Characteristics
This is a part-time, temporary, and non-benefited at-will position limited to no more than 995 hours per fiscal year.

Supervision Received and Exercised
Receives general direction from the Community Development department.


Essential Duties
Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.

Assists with plan and design review, affordable housing, minor code enforcement, general office and project support.

Assists customers at the public counter.

Respond to customers on the phone and via email.

Manages planning permit projects.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Knowledge of:
Strong background in principles, practices, trends, and theory of public planning.

Competency in examining architectural drawings and project site plans.

Understanding of laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to zoning and land use.
Statistical and research methods as applied to the collection, analysis, and presentation of planning data.


Knowledgeable in maps and GIS.


Software applications, including word processing, spreadsheet, database, and graphics applications.


Skills:

Interpret and explain planning and zoning programs, ordinances, statutes, and City policies and procedures to the general public.

Read and interpret architectural and engineering plans and specifications.

Strong business writing skills, including: business correspondence, report writing, and English usage, spelling, punctuation, and grammar.

Organizational skills.

Friendly and professional demeanor when working with the public.

Ability to:
Visually differentiate between colors on land use maps.

?Excellent attention to detail and follow-through.

Ability to work collaboratively with staff to resolve larger planning issues and department projects.

Ability to work work independently to meet deadlines.


Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Learn applicable laws and regulations pertaining to environmental protection and land use development.


Confident when working with applicants and answering challenging questions.

Communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.

Attend evening and weekend meetings.

Analyze situations quickly and objectively with proper course of action.

Physical Demands
On a continuous basis: stand, sit, bend, squat, climb, kneel, twist and reach, and lift and carry weight of 20 pounds or less.
