The City of Emeryville is a center of Art and Innovation nestled between Oakland and Berkeley. In one square mile, 12,000 residents coexist with 21,000 workers in Emeryville’s dynamic urban environment. Emeryville today is the result of the application of cutting-edge urban development policy, and the City continues to grow and evolve in this tradition.

The City is seeking a graduate student or recent graduate of a Master’s program in city planning, public administration, public policy, business administration or economics. The EDH Division of the Community Development Department implements a wide variety of projects and programs in diverse topic areas including affordable housing projects and policy, economic development, public art, capital improvements, brownfield remediation, and small business support.

The voters of Emeryville recently approved a measure for the issuance of $50m in general obligation bonds to support affordable housing projects and programs. Additionally, the City has received a grant related to developing management tools to mitigate displacement of residents from existing affordable units.

The City also received a grant for an innovative approach to the development of policies related to the use of curbside street space, which will apply land economics to determine the “highest and best” use of curb spaces.

Anticipated tasks include researching, reporting and posting housing and real estate data, assisting with programs and projects, helping with preparation of grant applications, and conducting field work.

Required skills include written and verbal communication, problem solving, organization, word processing, and working with spreadsheets and databases.

Desired skills include project management, land use and housing policy, GIS, Adobe Illustrator/general graphic design, and project development.

Compensation is $20-$21/hour depending on qualifications. Internship term up to two years, working 12 to 20 hours per week, up to 1,000 hours per fiscal year (July-June).
