Planner I, II & III

The City of Oakland is looking for dedicated people to contribute to the success of our community. The Planning and Building Department is currently recruiting qualified individuals to fill multiple Planner I, II & III vacancies in the Current Planning Division and in the Strategic Planning Division. The Current Planning Division reviews applications for proposed land use and development projects. The Strategic Planning Division prepares long-range land use plans, policies and programs for the City. These positions are an exciting opportunity to participate in shaping the future of Oakland. The ideal candidates are highly motivated professionals with the ability to work effectively with City staff, appointed and elected officials, and public stakeholders.

PLANNER I
$4,724 - $5,800/month. 37.5 work week

This is an entry-level classification. The Planner I position provides planning, zoning and subdivision information to the public; gathers planning data through field and library research; processes various permits and applications; conducts research related to land use regulations and the General Plan; prepares and posts public notices; writes approval or denial letters and reports; and performs related duties as assigned. Incumbents receive training in and perform routine duties involving planning, zoning and subdivision permits and regulations. Minimum requirements include Bachelor’s degree in planning, architecture, landscape architecture, urban studies, geography, or a related field from an accredited college or university and no experience required.

PLANNER II
$5,468 - $6,714/month. 37.5 work week

The Planner II position performs planning work involving current and advanced planning; reviews and implements zoning ordinances and general plan documents; conducts neighborhood and environmental impact studies; provides information to property owners, developers, and the public at the public information counter and in public meetings; writes approval or denial letters and reports; and performs related duties as assigned. Minimum requirements include Bachelor’s degree in planning, architecture, landscape architecture, urban studies, geography or a related from an accredited college or university and three years urban planning experience. A Master’s degree in city or urban planning may be substituted for one year of work experience.

PLANNER III
$6,331 - $7,774/month. 37.5 work week

The Planner III position plans, organizes, reviews, and participates in complex planning and zoning projects; develops studies, designs and plans of current projects or phases of the General Plan; monitors the preparation of environmental documents; makes presentations to community groups and at public hearings; can provide lead direction or supervision of assigned staff; and performs related duties as assigned. This is a mid-level position and qualified candidates should be capable of and comfortable with working with a degree of autonomy. Minimum requirements include Bachelor’s degree in planning, architecture, landscape architecture, urban studies, geography, or a related field from an accredited college or university and four years of progressively responsible urban planning experience. A Master’s degree in city or urban planning may be substituted for one year of work experience.
