Position Description:

Under the general supervision of the Director, Strategic Planning and Policy, the Transportation Sustainability Planner is responsible for supporting and implementing projects, programs, and initiatives to achieve the SFMTA’s Strategic Plan Objective 3.1: Reduce the Agency’s and the transportation system’s resource consumption, emissions, waste, and noise. This is an exciting time to join the Sustainability Team at SFMTA and a great opportunity to take part in developing the agency’s approach and priorities in sustainability and climate adaptation. The successful candidate will:

• Lead efforts to develop and maintain a tracking tool for all sustainability data at the SFMTA to support analysis and reporting needs.

• Support the development and implementation of programs to ensure that the SFMTA remains among the top agencies in terms of sustainability, including maintenance of the Agency’s Gold Level APTA Sustainability Commitment and achieving Platinum Level recognition.

• Lead agency greening pilots and projects to demonstrate best practice sustainability opportunities, such as water conservation strategies at facilities and in operations.

• Play a key role in a comprehensive effort to assess the vulnerability of SFMTA assets to the effects of climate change and develop an adaptation and resiliency plan for existing and new assets.

• Play a key role in shaping the agency’s Climate Action Strategy update, which establishes a set of strategic measures and actions to reduce GHG emissions from the transportation sector in San Francisco.

• Support the Sustainability Team on other sustainability initiatives through mapping, analysis, and data management.



Examples of Important and Essential Duties:

The duties specified below are characteristic of the range of responsibilities assigned to this position:

• Supports sustainability initiatives and lead projects that will advance the SFMTA’s goal of reducing the Agency’s and the transportation system’s resource consumption, emissions, waste, and noise.

• Gathers and analyzes data to inform recommendations to the SFMTA Leadership Team on improvements to the Agency’s Sustainability Program;

• Prepares presentations, and contributes toward meetings with staff, committees, boards, commissions, approval agencies, stakeholders, advocacy groups, and legislative bodies;

• Designs and prepares data, maps, charts and other visual materials to illustrate ideas, processes, plans and/or reports;

• Represents the agency to the community and other stakeholders, including public agencies, to establish working partnerships, and explain policies, programs and projects;

• Supports internal coordination and business planning tasks of the agency; and

• Performs other duties as assigned.
