Organization Overview

Founded in 2011 in San Francisco, SubArt is a creative place-making initiative that is reinventing the Bay Area’s mass transit experience. Great cities have great public spaces. In SF Bay Area, our most heavily used public space—our underground metro system—is grim and out of date. By revitalizing this space with immersive art, we can improve the daily experience for over 1/2 million people, attract new riders to our public transit system, and create an inspiring sense of place underground that will reflect the creativity above ground.

A fiscally sponsored project of SPUR, SubArt is a dynamic start-up organization that is working to transform the Bay Area’s metro station by catalyzing the creation of an art program within BART, engaging the general public, and building private partnerships that will allow for the integration of full-scale art in our underground metro stations.

Position Overview
This position works directly with SubArt leadership to assess existing art in transit in metro systems around the world. This project will research and create a presentation of art in transit designed to connect riders with the vision of large-scale public art. This informational resource and database will support knowledge building around transit-oriented community development and creative place-making initiatives.
This objective involves the identification of existing art in transit, the development of a database, and the creation of a document outlining art in transit.
