About the City:
Located in Marin County approximately ten miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge, the City of Belvedere has a physical setting surrounded by water that is unparalleled. The City has a total area of 2.42 square miles, containing .54 square miles of land and 1.89 square miles of water. It is the smallest incorporated City in Marin County with an estimated population of 2,100 persons.

Belvedere is primarily a residential community, with just a small fraction of the land devoted to commercial uses. The City is completely built out with approximately 900 single-family homes and 100 rental units, many which were designed by famous architects and have historic significance. The City’s comprehensive planning and design review process insures that high standards for both design and construction are maintained throughout the community.


About the Position:
The City seeks a highly qualified, customer service oriented professional with a strong background in design review to serve as Associate Planner.

The Associate Planner, under the direction of the City Planner, will be responsive to a highly involved and educated community that holds the City organization to a high standard of service and accountability. Design review and permitting of renovation projects large and small will consume a significant amount of the Associate Planner’s time. The Associate Planner will meet with applicants, make site visits, review plans and specifications, evaluate neighborhood and community impacts, write comprehensive staff reports and present well reasoned recommendations to the Planning Commission. Smaller, less complex projects may be approved administratively after thorough staff review.

Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate will have a strong design sense, a solid work ethic and the ability to understand the unique residential character of Belvedere.

The Associate Planner should also have experience with General Plan and Zoning Code amendments, CEQA interpretation and application, affordable housing requirements and reporting, land use and regulatory issues affecting waterfront communities and constraints imposed on properties located within FEMA designated Flood Zones.

Candidates should possess a Bachelor’s degree in urban planning, environmental science, architecture, geography or related field. Three years of progressively responsible planning experience in a local government setting is also required.
