Contra Costa Health Services (CCHS) Built Environment, Injury Prevention & Physical Activity Promotion Project is seeking a Built Environment Specialist to become part of our dynamic team. We work in partnership with other government organizations, community groups, and residents to build healthy, sustainable and socially-just neighborhoods through capacity building, technical assistance, urban planning, and policy change. The Built Environment Specialist provides lead direction and coordination for these efforts. This position requires an individual with strong communication, data and policy analysis skills. It also requires someone who is a strategic, critical thinker, who is able to communicate and advocate effectively within a diverse range of settings and communities. Areas of Work

The Built Environment Program works to improve the conditions of Contra Costa’s cities and neighborhoods including:

- Bicycle, pedestrian and transit infrastructure

- Land use planning

- Healthy, affordable housing

- Food access and urban agriculture

- Environmental justice and pollution

- Climate change mitigation and readiness

-Community voice and capacity


The Built Environment Specialist duties will include, but not be limited to, the following activities

- Analyze and present health and built environment data.

- Analyze, develop, and implement policy recommendations.

- Prepare written and oral reports.

-Build and maintain partnerships and coalitions with community members, stakeholder groups, and government partners to asses, vision, and transform neighborhoods.

- Create popular education curriculum and conduct trainings to support community capacity building.

- Provide technical assistance to residents and local groups working towards improvements to the built environment.

-Assist government agencies with conducting effective outreach in diverse, lower income communities to engage residents in built environment issues.

- Develop and coordinate a range of projects and programs.

-Participate in program evaluation and monitoring of built environment, physical activity, and injury prevention programs.

-Assist in researching funding sources and writing grant proposals to support injury, built environment, and food security programs.

Candidates must demonstrate:

-Commitment to and experience in working for equity in diverse communities.
-Experience in developing and carrying out training curricula with community residents
-Knowledge of current best practices and policies to prevent injuries, promote physical activity, and integrate health with land use and transportation planning
-Ability to collaborate effectively with community groups, residents, city staff, and professionals from the fields of transportation, planning, engineering, and public health
-Skills in facilitating and participating in collaboratives and coalitions.
-Expertise in oral, written, and electronic communication to a diverse array of audiences with different experiences and perspectives.
-Skill in the use of data to make the case for policy change.
-Skill in research.

Minimum qualifications:

-License Required: Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's License. Out-of-state valid motor vehicle operator's license will be accepted during the application process.
-Education: Possession of a Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in public health, urban planning, public policy, or a closely related field.
-Experience: One (1) year of full-time or its equivalent experience in a health services agency or program performing health promotion, health prevention, urban planning, or community health education work.
-Substitution: A Bachelor’s Degree and two years of full-time or its equivalent experience in a health services agency or program performing health promotion, health prevention, urban planning, or community health education work.

Preferred qualifications:

-Master’s Degree in urban planning, public health, public policy, or other closely related fields
-Experience in the use of GIS and map-making
-A track record of successful grant writing
-Fluent in Spanish

Salary:
- $59,754 - $65,879 depending on experience, with benefits
- This is a contract position with an opportunity to compete for a similar county civil service position in the future.
