POSITION DESCRIPTION:

This is an opportunity to work in a dynamic, inter-disciplinary, and innovative department and share in our vision to make San Francisco the worlds’ most livable urban place – environmentally, economically, socially and culturally.

Invest in Neighborhoods is an interagency partnership to strengthen and revitalize neighborhood commercial districts around San Francisco. The initiative, led by the Office of Economic and Workforce Development (OEWD), currently being piloted in 25 commercial districts, aims to strengthen existing business, improve physical conditions, increase quality of life and increase community capacity. Invest in Neighborhoods will leverage City programs and resources in order to respond to the specific needs and opportunities in each district.

The Citywide Division of the Planning Department began working in District 1 this summer. The result was a Draft Existing Conditions report for District 1. Building on this report, the intern(s) will be an integral part of the team and the essential duties include, but are not limited to:

*Revising and completing the Existing Conditions Report

*Scoping and completing a Needs Assessment Report:

**A needs assessment is a survey of the community and stakeholder groups to determine what the needs are of the residents, workers and visitors to District 1. The intern(s) will conduct research, administer surveys, stakeholder interviews and focus groups, and also produce the report.

*Scoping and completing an Issues and Opportunities Report: A final report summarizing key issues and opportunities for further planning work in District 1. The intern(s) will develop and produce this report identifying the next steps and opportunities for future work with the Planning Department, other city agencies and/or the community.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

*Requires completion of a four-year college or university with a baccalaureate degree, and completion of one full year of graduate study at a recognized university in a two-year program leading to a Master’s Degree in City or Regional Planning.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICAITONS:

*Graduate degree in Urban Planning or a related field

*Excellent written and oral communication

*Experience with Adobe Suite (Illustrator and In Design) and GIS

*Experience developing survey or interview guides
