AC Transit is currently accepting applications for a Transportation Planner Intern from well-qualified graduate students enrolled in Transportation Planning, Urban Planning, Public Administration, or related program. The Transportation Planner Intern will gain valuable hands-on planning experience under general supervision of a Senior Transportation Planner. The successful candidate will perform tasks and assist in project delivery and project management for the projects listed above, as well as other assignments, as needed.

Interns should be available to work 16-24 hours per week, during regular business hours (8am-5pm), for a period of 6-12 months. Interns may be permitted to work up to 40 hours per week during summer semester.

Example of Duties:
The Transportation Engineering Graduate Student Intern will provide civil/traffic engineering design support, which may include:
• Drafting engineering drawings with AutoCAD or Google SketchUp;
• Reviewing engineering drawings and micro-simulation output;
• Writing and reviewing technical memos;
• Field work to take measurements and examine conditions;
• Construction oversight tasks; and
• Other tasks, as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
• Currently enrolled in an accredited graduate program with a focus in transportation engineering, civil engineering, or related field;
• Not scheduled to graduate before December 2014;
• Experience with AutoCAD, VisSim, and Google SketchUp highly desired;
• Proficiency with Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); and
• Valid driver’s license.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
• Standard transportation engineering principles, methods, and processes;
• Basic research methods, survey design, and database management techniques;
• Principles and practices of transit operations, transportation planning, traffic engineering and the inter-relationships of various transportation modes;
• Ability to interpret data using appropriate statistical techniques;
• Familiarity with project scheduling applications; and
• Strong written and oral communication skills.

Physical Demands/Requirements
Must maintain the physical condition necessary to: (1) perform tasks in an office setting operating a personal computer, keyboards, and other peripheral equipment; and (2) possess physical mobility in order to conduct field studies.
