The City of Millbrae invites applications for a part-time voluntary Planning Intern within the City’s Community Development Department. Under general direction of the Community Development Director and specific direction of the City Planner, this position will perform a variety of research, data entry, counter service, project review, and organizational tasks related to the General Plan, Zoning Ordinance, BART area specific plan, the land development application process, and other duties as assigned. Scheduling is flexible within a 9 to 5, five-day work week.

Minimum qualifications are current enrollment and good standing in either an undergraduate or graduate level city/regional planning program, completion of at least some course work that is directly relevant and readily applicable to city/regional planning, and possession of a valid California driver’s license. Preference will be given to those whose program requires a planning internship as a condition of graduation.

Expected skills/abilities include effective verbal and written communication, ability to carry out instructions and deliver work products with minimal supervision and in a timely manner, working knowledge of research and basic statistical techniques as well as MS Office, aptitude for land use and development related matters, attention to detail, and, above all, critical thinking capabilities.

Special requirements include the physical agility and flexibility needed to perform field investigations and access file cabinets and bookshelves, and the dexterity and vision needed to operate computer equipment with a high degree of proficiency.

Compensation is not mandatory, but will be considered after 6 months of exceptional performance, in the form of an hourly wage of $10.00 per hour (no benefits), for someone who demonstrates exceptional skills and productivity on the job.

Criminal and/or personal background checks may be performed. Use of illegal drugs or abuse of legal drugs will prevent or terminate the internship.
