Sunday Streets creates miles of car-free roads for San Francisco residents and visitors to get out and be active in diverse San Francisco neighborhoods. Founded in 2008, Sunday Streets has grown into one of the San Francisco’s most exciting initiatives promoting biking, walking, recreation, and community-building.

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) co-presents Sunday Streets with Livable City, the non-profit partner responsible for day to day management of the program. Livable City has a small but dedicated full-time staff, augmented by passionate interns and volunteers.

Position Overview

For the 2014 Sunday Streets season, Livable City is hiring a team of 4 interns. Each intern will be responsible for one aspect of the day to day management of the Sunday Streets program. Together, the intern team will be key to staffing each Sunday Streets event and managing event-day volunteers. There will be nine Sunday Streets in 2014, approximately 1 per month between March and October.

Sunday Streets interns work closely with each other with the Sunday Streets Volunteer and Logistics Manager, Programs Manager, and Outreach Coordinator. Each internship requires 10-15 hours/week on average and up to 20 hours/week on event weeks. Attendance at all Sunday Streets events is mandatory. A modest stipend is provided as compensation.

Communications Intern
• Manage social media.
• Keep blogs/media up to date on Sunday Streets activities.
• Assist with monthly newsletter.
• Design event posters and other promotional materials.
• Assist Programs Manager and Sunday Streets Director with other tasks as requested.

Community Outreach Internship
• Work with Outreach Coordinator, Programs Manager, and Logistics & Volunteer Coordinator to implement outreach plan for each Sunday Streets event.
• Canvas merchants, organizations, and residents before each Sunday Streets event.
• Recruit, train, and lead outreach volunteers.
• Maintain database of outreach contacts.
• Attend community meetings.
• Lead outreach activities at Sunday Streets event Information Booths.
• Assist Programs Manager and Outreach Coordinator with other tasks as requested.

Volunteer Program Internship
• Assist in recruiting, scheduling, and managing event volunteers.
• Lead pre-event volunteer trainings.
• Organize and facilitate volunteer check-in and orientation at events.
• Plan volunteer appreciation events and solicit donations for volunteer appreciation gifts and perks.
• Manage database of volunteers.
• Assist Volunteer and Logistics Manager with other tasks as requested.

Events and Volunteer Support Internship
• Recruit, train, and lead volunteers to complete event prep activities, including: preparing and posting “no parking” signs on the route.
• Manage inventory of Sunday Streets volunteer program and event supplies.
• Plan and lead event setup and breakdown.
• Assist in submitting appropriate permits for each event.
• Attend Sunday Streets Logistics Committee meetings with city staff.
• Assist Volunteer and Logistics Manager with other tasks as requested.

All interns - General Responsibilities Include
• Apply best practices for volunteer recruitment, training, and appreciation.
• Lead volunteer teams at each Sunday Streets event.
• Support traffic management and emergency efforts with the City staff
• Work closely with other interns and staff to achieve all program goals.

Skills & Knowledge to be Gained

• Experience planning and executing a successful open streets initiative
• Large-scale event logistics planning including traffic management and emergency coordination
• Volunteer training, care, management best practices
• Community organizing
• Working with City officials and decision-makers, community organizations, and partner agencies

Requirements

Essential:
• Past volunteer experience (not necessarily with Sunday Streets)
• Track record of working well on team projects
• Excellent oral & written communications skills
• Cheerful, friendly, upbeat outlook
• Natural leadership qualities
• Demonstrated passion for creating a more livable city for the entire San Francisco community
• Able to ride a bicycle as transportation, haul a bicycle trailer, and lift at least 50lbs
• Available to work some business hours Monday through Friday, from February through October, and all 9 event Sundays
• Some evening and weekend work required

Helpful:
• Bilingual strongly preferred (particularly Spanish or Cantonese)
• Knowledge of Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, and Macintosh computers
• Perky (yet professional) writing style
• Familiarity with Sunday Streets
• Experience using Salesforce for Non Profits
• Valid CA Drivers' License (for at least 1 year)
