The incumbent in this position will be assigned to the Planning Systems Information Section within the Office of Transportation Planning (MassDOT Planning). He/She will serve as part of a team of geographic information system (GIS) and other transportation staff who create or maintain spatial databases, perform various analyses, create or update maps, process data requests, perform traffic find socioeconomic forecasting , compile and calculate various transportation statistics , assist with special studies or surveys , and help to manage multi-year projects (i.e. oblique imagery, custom web-based applications, and custom road inventory upgrades) conducted by consultants/vendors.

The incumbent will correspond with and respond to technical questions from other MassDOT staff, metropolitan planning organizations, other Massachusetts agencies, and the general public regarding the use of GIS software and geographic web-based applications produced by the GIS Services Group of MassDOT Planning. Areas of interest for this support include ITS elements, highway right-of-way attributes, and structurally deficient and functionally obsolete bridges.

As a web content editor, the selected candidate will work with the other staff to provide written content for Planning’s public-facing website, including working with clients and content domain experts to collect, organize, and publish final content to the site.

Other duties Include: updating existing summary reports , updating existing technical manuals, creating new reports as needed , ensuring that all MassDOT Planning office printers, plotters, computers, and other equipment are functioning properly, assisting staff with Microsoft Office basic software support, mounting maps on boards as needed , and signing out equipment as requested (i.e., laptop computers, LCD projectors, digital cameras, etc.)

This position requires proficiency in ArcGIS 9.3 or higher, and all Microsoft Office software. A thorough working knowledge of computing hardware (including, but not limited to: printers, plotters, scanners, smart boards, etc.) is essential

The incumbent in this position should be willing to work in a fast –paced office environment, performing multiple tasks and projects simultaneously, while demonstrating professionalism in handling requests and interacting with other staff, agencies, and public-all consistent with MassDOT’s goals of providing excellent customer service
Qualifications:

Minimum Entrance Requirements:

Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional or technical experience in urban planning, regional planning, land use planning or transportation planning, and (B) of which at least one year must have been in a professional capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:
I. A Bachelor's degree with a major in urban or regional planning or transportation, civil or environmental engineering may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required (A) experience.*

II. A Graduate degree with a major in urban or regional planning or transportation, civil or environmental engineering may be substituted for the required experience.*

*Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

Salary Range: $51,616.24 to $70,942.56 Annually
