The Metropolitan Planning Department of Nashville/Davidson County seeks an Urban Designer to join its Design Studio – an in-house studio of planners with expertise in architecture, landscape architecture and urban design. This staff member will provide analysis and recommendations to Metro Nashville on community planning and urban design issues in a wide variety of rural, suburban and urban settings, with an emphasis on sustainable planning.

Qualifications - The ideal candidate:

-demonstrates innovative thinking in planning for sustainable communities on a site, neighborhood, community, and regional scale;
-demonstrates knowledge of the principles, practices, and trends in architecture and urban design;
-can conduct studies, analyze findings and provide recommendations for a wide range of urban design issues with an emphasis on architecture and building design;
-can interpret federal, state, and local regulations and ordinances;
-possesses strong written, oral and graphic communications skills and is -able to communicate with a wide variety of stakeholders in a clear, compelling manner;
-is familiar with New Urbanism, SmartGrowth, and Form-based Coding principles;
-can understand and interpret building and site plans;
-possesses illustrative graphic skills in hand renderings and/or computer aided techniques; and
-possesses project management experience supervising professional and technical staff.

MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's Degree in architecture or urban design from an accredited college or university,and Master’s Degree in architecture, urban design or planning from an accredited college or universityandfour (4) or more years of planning experience demonstrating use of architecture/urban design skills. Relevant work experience may be substituted for the master’s degree. This position is classified as a Planner 2 and will be filled as a contract position (non-civil service), subject to final funding approval.

Salary: $62,218. Excellent health, dental and retirement benefits.

Illustrator, Adobe Acrobat, Photoshop, In Design, preferred
