The City of Vacaville has current student internship opportunities within the following departments. Student Internships require current enrollment as an undergraduate or graduate student at the time of hire. Student Interns work a flexible schedule, up to 29 hours per week.

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES AND MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

DEPARTMENT: COMMUNITY SERVICES

The Community Services Intern will work on a special project related to the development of a comprehensive Volunteer Program for the Community Services Department. This may include development of volunteer position descriptions, policies and procedures, program materials, community outreach, training and orientation plans and a volunteer recognition program

Minimum Qualifications: Current major in Public Administration, Public Relations, Recreation Administration, Human Services Administration or Social Services. Strong oral, written and interpersonal communications are required.

DEPARTMENT: PUBLIC WORKS/Engineering (NOTE: Salary range for Public Works Engineering Interns is $14.10-$18.00 per hour/DOQ)

Engineering Interns perform drafting and provide design support using AutoCAD Civil 3D; create GIS databases; prepare spreadsheets; perform field work including surveying and utility verification; prepare engineering studies under supervision; perform advanced calculations; measure and calculate project quantities; perform advanced data collection, management and analysis; perform hydraulic and other engineering analysis; research project plans and files for information as necessary; organize development and construction project documents under supervision; and assist with general office and field tasks.

Minimum Qualifications: Must be enrolled in an accredited engineering program to obtain a B.S. Degree in Engineering. Must have completed sophomore engineering curriculum (i.e. completed math through differential equations, physics series, and chemistry) to be eligible for the Engineering Intern position. Intermediate computer skills for working with spreadsheets and databases, and experience in using Microsoft Office 2007 are highly desirable. Experience in using AutoCAD Civil 3D 2011 is preferred for internship with the Engineering Services Division. Good oral and written communication, organizational, and research skills are required.

DEPARTMENT: UTILITIES/Water Quality Laboratory

Laboratory Interns will gain a general understanding of all aspects of laboratory operation, including aspects of the wastewater treatment plan and water treatment system for the City of Vacaville. Typical duties of a lab intern include: sample collection and analysis; data entry; bacteriological media preparation; glassware and filtration preparation; restocking of lab supplies; filing of documentation; instrument and equipment preventative maintenance; and general laboratory housekeeping.

Minimum Qualifications: Current major in a life science disipline (Chemistry, Biology, or related).

DEPARTMENT: UTILITIES/ Water Quality Pretreatment

A Utilities/WQ Pretreatment Intern may do the following duties: Assessment of sewer impact fees; plan check review; import and export of laboratory analytical data into database; field work including wastewater sample collection, stormwater outfall surveying and/or sampling (requires walking along creek banks); monthly validation of data from continuous online wastewater effluent analyzers; obtaining water consumption data from water billing software on specific industrial or commercial users; monthly billing of industrial wastewater dischargers; monthly review of industrial user self-monitoring reports; miscellaneous tasks associated with planning of Coastal Creek Cleanup Day.

Minimum Qualifications: Current major in Engineering, Chemistry, Biology or Environmental Science. Must be proficient in MS Word, Excel and Outlook. Must have good oral and written communication skills, good problem solving skills, and ability to learn how to use electronic devices (hand held GPS). Experience with navigation of MS Access based databases is a plus.
