The Community Organizer organizes and empowers tenants on housing advocacy and tenant rights issues by providing education and technical assistance to the Community Tenants Association (CTA) and Ping Yuen Residents Improvement Association (PYRIA). This position will also assist the Civic Engagement Team in achieving objectives related to civic engagement effort and provide housing counseling to tenants through community education and outreach.

General Job Responsibilities:
-Provide technical assistance, staffing support and translation services to CTA and PYRIA in areas including but not limited to: organize and empower tenants on tenant rights and community advocacy; educate tenants on community issues; coordinate meetings, events and activities
-Promote civic engagement dialogues in the low income community and assist in achieving objectives for civic engagement efforts
-Provide housing counseling to tenants
-Conduct meetings and workshops
-Provide community education, outreach material to tenant groups, community members and city agencies on housing issues, policies and legislations

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:
-Strong written and verbal communication skills
-Ability to speak fluent Cantonese and read and write Chinese and conduct workshops and meetings in English and Cantonese
-Experience working with low-income immigrant neighborhoods and familiarity with issues relevant to the community
-Strong creative and comprehensive problem solving skills
-Good listening skills and ability to exercise patience

Minimum Qualifications:
-Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in social service, sociology, psychology, or related field
-Bilingual and bi-literate in Cantonese/Chinese and English
-Basic word processing, Excel spreadsheet
-Ability to work flexible hours (evening and weekends)

Preferred Qualifications:
-Experience working in the Chinatown neighborhood
-Familiarity with Chinese software program
-Two (2) years experience in non-profit agency serving low-income clients
-Ability to speak Mandarin
