The City of Emeryville seeks a City Planning graduate student or recent Master’s degree graduate for the Planning Division of the Community Development Department.
Skills required include
Graphic and map design and production using ArcGIS, Illustrator, InDesign, and Acrobat;
Research, photography, field work, spatial and numeric data analysis, and writing;
Meeting facilitation, surveys, and database entry;
Planning for transportation, housing, parks, or other topics.

The intern may help to
Compile an annual report on implementation of the General Plan and Housing Element;
Write articles and take photos for the City News and Activity Guide;
Create and update maps related to housing production, planning policies and grant applications;
Manage GIS files, such as by copying updated shapefiles into source folders;
Research products for use in the Community Development Department’s work;
Prepare for and host meetings, such as those of the AC Transit – Emeryville Liaison Committee;
Research grant application questions and draft application language;
Respond to information requests, for GIS shapefiles and for information on planning regulations;
Research topics to inform policy questions, such as for drafting ordinances;
Update address lists for residential units, businesses, and managers of multi-family buildings;
Occasionally cover the City information/reception desk during the receptionist’s lunch and breaks;
Provide existing conditions data for pedestrian-bicycle consultants;
Produce or update publicity and information pieces in InDesign or Acrobat;
Conduct surveys on topics related to planning projects;
Shadow current planners during plan review and at the Planning counter;
Enter, update, and attach documents to current planning projects in Trakit permit tracking system.
Compensation is $21.50 to $22.50 per hour depending on education level.
Interns may stay up to 2 years, working 14 to 20 hours per week, up to 1,000 hours per fiscal year.
