Job Description: Research Assistant for project “Evaluating the effects of bicycle education interventions on mode shift, confidence, and riding habits”

The UC Berkeley Institute for Transportation Studies has funded a study to understand the effectiveness of bicycling education classes. As part of that effort we are surveying participants of Bay Area bicycle education classes to understand how the class intervention affects participants’ choice to bicycle, bicycling confidence, and other bicycle riding habits. The outcome of this study will provide key policymakers, practitioners and advocates with data and research to show the impacts of bicycle education on bicycle ridership, and support cities looking for strategies to increase bicycle mode share.

We are looking for a Research Assistant to assist with study participant enrollment, including administering consent forms, administering surveys, answering questions about the research project, and collecting and managing data. This position will take place primarily on the weekend and requires traveling to various sites in Berkeley, Oakland, Dublin and other East Bay cities as needed.

Hours per week: Approximately 2-6 hours per week depending on the class schedule and location

Period: 9/1/2018-5/1/2019

Saturday, October 6th, 2018 (Berkeley)
Saturday, October 20th, 2018 (Oakland)

Saturday, November 17th, 2018 (Oakland)
Saturday, December 1st, 2018 (Berkeley)
Saturday, December 15th, 2018 (Oakland)

Hourly Rate: $15/hr (includes travel time)

Duties and Responsibilities:
Undergo CITI training;
Travel to bicycle education class locations across the East Bay on the days noted above;
Enroll participants in the study, including but not limited to:
Explaining the study and inviting individuals taking the class to participate in the study;
Administering consent form and survey to participants;
Collecting data on participants enrolled in diversion program.
Maintain strict confidentiality of participant and survey data.

Required qualifications:
Current UC Berkeley student;
Ability to travel around the East Bay independently;
Strong verbal communication skills;
Strong attention to detail;
Strong computer literacy skills.

Preferred qualifications:
Interest in transportation and/or bicycling;
Experience with Qualtrics;
Experience with survey administration.
