Seeking an experienced researcher / writer to collaborate on industry leading book focused on the social, economic and placemaking value of Incremental Development. .

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Working Title: BUILDING SMALL: Bringing Back Neighborhood Relevant Real Estate
A Handbook for Real Estate Entrepreneurs, Public Officials,and Great Communities

Publisher: The Urban Land Institute (ULI)
Collaborating Partners: Preservation Green Lab, National Main Streets, LOCUS, Project for Lean Urbanism

Target Publication Date: Spring 2018

Overview: This first-of-its-kind book will look at the importance of smaller scale, fine grained development as a tool for building resilient neighborhoods and places people love. Building Small is intended to be both an inspiration for Civic Leaders and How-To-Manual for entrepreneurial developers and NGO’s. Content will focus on what defines Small Scale Development, how it makes a positive contribution to neighborhoods by supporting local economic resilience and great places, and the real estate tools and techniques that work in crafting small scale, unique projects.. Proposed content will include multiple case studies of projects and firms, as well as practical development techniques and lessons.

The selected researcher(s) /writer(s) will collaborate with the lead author to provide research support on trends, value creation and case studies, interview content contributors, participate in review sessions with the Advisory Committee and help with the manuscript.

The project is intended to complete research and drafting by January of 2018, and the majority of the work will take place in September – December 2017.

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS
Architecture, urban design or planning background with Master Degree preferred
Strong understanding of new urbanism and real estate development techniques
Excellent research capabilities
Excellent writing skills that are accessible and non jargonistic, but technically accurate and industry relevant
Bay Area location preferred
Self starter with good communication skills
Able to work independently



PROJECT PROCESS DESCRIPTION
Literature review of articles & publications related to this subject
Case study interviews on projects and development firms, with potential to conduct site visits
Draft high level concepts for review and discussion with lead author, and Advisory Committee, and then refine drafts

COMPENSATION
Estimated as a 3-4 month project that will be paid as a stipend, at complete milestones
Contributing author recognition on final publication
Travel expenses to review case studies, conduct interviews or meet with committee
