Greenbelt Alliance is looking for a volunteer intern to support our work advancing sustainable, equitable development across the Bay Area. The intern will engage in a variety of cutting-edge research, organizing, and advocacy projects, such as the following:
• Plan Bay Area 2040 advocacy – shaping the region’s vision for how we grow
• The Committee on Affordable and Sustainable Accommodations – addressing the Bay Area’s chronic housing affordability challenges in sustainable ways
• The Development Endorsement Program – rewarding stellar examples of smart growth

What the Smart Growth Volunteer Intern will be doing:
• Researching smart growth policies and infill development projects
• Communicating with public agency staff, non-profits, and developers
• Attending or providing public comment at city and regional public meetings
• Engaging with smart growth supporters
• Supporting program staff as needed

The Smart Growth Volunteer Intern should have these skills:
• Knowledge of urban planning issues, particularly land use and public participation processes
• Strong writing and organizational skills
• Excellent attention to detail and follow-through
• Ability to work independently to meet deadlines
• Ability to work collaboratively
• Friendly and professional demeanor

Time Commitment
The volunteer intern will be working 15-20 hour/week for a minimum of three months. Volunteer interns are expected to adhere to a regular work schedule, but working hours are flexible and interns can generally choose this schedule. Most work will be completed at our San Francisco office, but occasional travel may be required.

Benefits of the Volunteer Internship
This internship is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in land use, transportation, and environmental issues, while developing a network of contacts and references in the field. When applying for future jobs, you’ll be able to point to tangible results from your work and describe a discrete project that you led. This position is unpaid. Travel reimbursement may be available if you are working more than 30 hours a week and can demonstrate financial need.
