The Research Associate’s role is to support our research staff on wide variety of projects related to housing, education, human services and demographic research. Intellectual curiosity, solution-driven orientation, commitment to the organization’s mission, flexibility and creativity within the specifications of the position are assets, as is knowledge of the Oakland/Bay Area communities. This position requires someone with a combination of training, skills and experience in housing, geography, public health, sociology or urban economic development along with strong technical skills. SPECIFIC DUTIES INCLUDE:

- Data discovery using online, administrative and local sources
- Processing and cleaning of housing and urban economic development related data
- Providing meeting support including logistics, planning , note-taking, charting
- Conducting literature reviews, report writing and research synthesis
- Performing data analysis using Excel, Access, SPSS, R, Python
- Applying Web data visualization tools such as D3, CartoDB
- Data scraping using Python, WikiScraper or other tools
- Spatial data analysis using desktop and web mapping systems (open source preferred)
- Perform other duties as required



QUALIFICATIONS:

Education Requirements

A Masters degree and a minimum of two year’s experience in the fields of social science, geography, housing, policy or urban planning. With an Undergraduate Degree you will need at least five years of related experience.



Training, Experience and Proficiency in:

- Housing, urban planning, education systems, geography, social science or public health knowledge
- Basic research methods and quantitative analysis
- Creating and maintaining databases (Excel, Access, SQL, cloud databases, fusion tables)
- Data analysis, interpretation, report preparation and presentation
- Oral and written communication
- Knowledge of open source software development lifecycle and Github use
- Moderate HTML, CSS & Javascript along with some common web mapping platforms
- Design of print and web content for audience accessibility
- Working with people from diverse ethnic, linguistic economic and professional backgrounds



SALARY:

This is a full-time (37.5 hours per week) regular position with an attractive benefits package. Salary: $50,000-$65,000, depending on qualifications and experience.
