Background: Empower Efficiency is a growing consulting company dedicated to making energy efficiency and renewable energy desirable to consumers. In partnership with local leaders and local electric and gas utilities, Empower Efficiency specializes in developing, implementing, and evaluating energy efficiency, renewable, and clean energy initiatives that combine social psychology, consumer-focused community-based social marketing, and grassroots outreach.

This position will support a large-scale behavioral initiative in two cities in the San Francisco Bay Area: San Francisco and San Jose. We are seeking a versatile person to work with our team on an innovative, behavior-based energy efficiency project in the commercial building sector.

The successful candidate will have a combination of excellent communication and interpersonal skills, project management experience, sales or account management experience, and the ability to work well with all levels of internal management, staff, and outside clients and vendors. The job requires an individual who is flexible and creative, working both independently and collaboratively, depending on client and management direction.

The duties include site visits with initiative participants to: 1) execute behavior-based energy efficiency campaigns; 2) collect information about participants’ engagement; 3) communicate opportunities for improvement of the campaigns; 4) measure the progress of multiple campaigns; and 5) additional ad hoc support to initiative participants as needed to ensure initiative success.

We are looking for candidates with an entrepreneurial spirit, as well as a passion for reducing energy waste in buildings.

Responsibilities:
• Execute Behavior-Based Energy Efficiency Campaigns for participating large companies
o Work with Director of Innovation on implementation plan and any customizations to each campaign
o Work with the client to set up the campaign, and then create a schedule to manage it and measure the results. There will be short run and perpetual types of campaigns that will have different executional and management procedures
o Prepare and report all findings and observations in a timely manner
o Make adjustments to the campaign as indicated by the client and the Empower Efficiency executive team
o Support the morale of the campaigns, and keep the client’s and participant’s excitement levels high
• Contribute to and support overall strategy for outreach to participating companies
o Collaborate on the development of assessment method and approach to documentation and reporting of findings
o Work with the Director of Innovation on the development of training materials and train client, participants, and other team members
o Develop insights concerning lessons learned, best practices, and opportunities for improvement of the behavior-based campaigns and materials
• Potential optional role: Execute simple field experiments
o Work with Empower Efficiency executive team and the client to identify promising areas of focus for field experiments
o Work with the Director of Innovation and various project personnel to coordinate and implement the experimental designs in a rigorous and timely manner
o Work with the process evaluation team to identify data collection and evaluation needs
o Monitor and review progress and evaluate results

Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Social Science, Systems, Marketing, Business, or another relevant field
• Graduate degree is a bonus
• One to Three (1 to 3) years of experience with:
o Community-based social marketing, psychology, behavioral economics, statistics, consumer product marketing, research methods, sustainability, etc.
o Building energy waste reducing options, especially occupant-controlled energy actions (e.g., one-time and habitual actions), as well as low-hanging technology solutions (e.g., approval, purchase, and installation actions); knowledge of building technology is a plus

• Strong oral and written communication skills, including experience in preparing and delivering reports and public presentations
• Ability to condense and explain technical information in concise and pointed summaries that can be understood by diverse constituents (i.e., not social scientists)
• Ability to work independently and as a member of many teams at once; Well-organized and self-motivated, ability to work in an office or at home, by yourself
• Ability to develop and manage interpersonal relationships
• Ability to design work plans, and to prioritize and meet goals under strict deadlines and changing priorities
• High attention to detail and the ability to perform multiple tasks under tight deadlines
• Ability to maintain a calm demeanor and work productively despite competing priorities
• Competent with standard software applications, including: word processing, databases, spreadsheets, and presentations
• Ability to observe human behavior, and competence in research methods
• Ability to maintain employee engagement, creating enthusiasm and buy-in

Bonus Qualifications:
• Experience working on California commercial energy efficiency initiatives and policies
• Familiarity with the San Francisco Bay Area and willingness to travel to project locations
• Experience with graphic design software a plus

Compensation: $60,000 to $85,000 USD per year, depending on experience level.
