We are currently recruiting to fill an entry-level Planner I position within the Planning and Building Department. The Planner I will provide planning, zoning and subdivision information to the public; gather planning data through field and library research; process various permits and applications; prepare and post public notices; write approval or denial letters and reports; and perform related duties as assigned.

Incumbents receive training in and perform routine duties involving planning, zoning, subdivisions and permits. This classification has been designated for flexible staffing. Incumbents in the Planner I classification may be eligible to advance without formal examination to the Planner II classification in accordance with established City flexible staffing policies and procedures.

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in planning, architecture, landscape architecture, urban studies, geography or a related field, a CA driver’s license, and knowledge of principles, practices and trends in municipal planning, zoning, subdivisions, urban design and land use, as well as research and statistical methodology. Strong written/verbal communication, report writing, computer and interpersonal skills are essential.
