The Associate for Health and Community Development will be responsible for supporting the membership of the organization and its senior policy staff on health policy and community development initiatives and programs. For Health Policy, the associate will focus on the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, workplace and community wellness and public policy as it relates to our biotech and health related member companies. For the Community Development work, the associate will work to increase awareness of successful affordable housing developments and their subsequent community benefits, as well as directly engage community leaders in important discussions around best practice land use and housing policies. Much of the Community Development work will include event management and engagement with local city staff and officials as they develop new policy solutions.

This individual will support and enhance the Silicon Valley Leadership Group's role in health and community development through policy advocacy and programs; and provide general project and office assistance, as needed. Duties include policy analysis and memo writing, project management, meeting/event planning and facilitation, and coordination of and leading some special programs and initiatives.

Roles and Responsibilities

• Coordinate advocacy efforts through letter writing, testimony and coalition-building. Represent the Leadership Group by participating in key industry and community events; speaking before public bodies, agencies and community groups; preparing presentations for policy directors; and partnering with policy directors on special events and conferences.

• Where directed, advance the Leadership Group's policy positions by developing and maintaining relationships with key policy makers, community leaders, and organizations, and identifying opportunities to partner on issues of mutual interest. This includes developing close relationships with local elected officials and deeper involvement with a local city's politics and policies.

• Provide staff support to the Leadership Group's policy staff and relevant policy committees.

Skills
• 1-2 years relevant work experience

• Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills

• Ability to conduct research and prepare memos, reports and advocacy letters quickly that are thorough and factually correct

• Ability to write for a variety of audiences in different formats including emails, newsletter and web content, and opinion editorials

• Knowledge and experience in public policy and political processes (specific knowledge and experience in health care policy a plus)

• Strong organizational skills; ability to organize events and facilitate meetings (past experience with community organizing and event management a plus)

• Ability to work independently as well as part of a team; ability to manage student interns ("coordinators") and volunteers

• Proficiency with Microsoft Word and PowerPoint and Internet research required (familiarity with Salesforce and WordPress to update web content a plus)

• Ability to prioritize, handle and execute multiple items and projects at the same time

• Ability to handle and thrive in a fast pace environment with the flexibility to pivot to unanticipated opportunities or projects

Salary Range:
Competitive non-profit organization salary and benefits w/ health care (employee contribution), dental; 401(k) plan. Starting salary based on experience (range: $48,000-$55,000). Our offices are currently based in San Jose within walking distance of the airport, Guadalupe River Trail and public transit.
