The Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (GSAPP) at Columbia University invites applications for full-time, open-rank faculty positions in Urban Planning in the tenured, tenure-track and professor of practice categories. The GSAPP is a school dedicated to designing and understanding the local and global built environment with programs in Architecture, Planning, Preservation, Real Estate Development, Urban Design, Curatorial Studies, and doctoral programs in Architecture and Planning. The Urban Planning program is one of the oldest in the nation and has approximately 100 Master’s and 25 Ph.D. students. The Program’s mission is to prepare our students to become leaders of the profession, who are technically capable, ethically informed and committed to the pursuit of equity and social justice in the betterment of the lives of urban people and urban places.

Open to candidates across all urban planning fields, GSAPP is particularly interested in candidates who teach and conduct research in physical planning, environmental issues (including the effects of climate change on cities), data analytics, community development, and global urbanization. Senior candidates should be able and willing to direct the Urban Planning Program. We anticipate hiring two new faculty for a start date of July 1, 2016.

Responsibilities will include teaching, research, and administration. Successful applicants will demonstrate a commitment to advancing the field through teaching, practice, and/or research. They will show clear evidence of expertise and have strong leadership and communications skills. They must have demonstrated capacity for original work and show promise of significant continuing contributions. A Master’s or Ph.D degree in Urban Planning or a closely related field is required.

Senior positions require substantial teaching, research, and/or professional experience. Qualifications for senior positions (tenured or tenure-track) include a strong record of refereed publications and a demonstrable record of outstanding scholarship. Applicants to junior positions must show evidence of great promise of teaching, research and/or professional excellence. Qualifications for junior positions (tenure-track) include emerging leadership in the candidate’s field and the potential to produce outstanding scholarship. Professors of Practice candidates should have significant experience in planning practice and a demonstrable record of excellence in their professional career. Faculty of the Urban Planning Program are expected to collaborate with colleagues across GSAPP on research, teaching studios and events.

GSAPP seeks faculty who can innovate their disciplines and can create an environment where students can not only be educated in current and past ideas and methods, but can also explore and test new ideas. Therefore, preference will generally be given to candidates who are able to teach and/or conduct research in both traditional fields and in an emergent specialization.

Qualified individuals from diverse backgrounds and experiences are encouraged to apply. GSAPP enjoys a diverse faculty and is actively seeking to expand a core group of individuals who can bring new ideas and approaches by way of their own experiences and backgrounds. Columbia University is committed to supporting the work-life balance of its faculty and is an affirmative action, equal opportunity employer. We strongly encourage applications from women, minorities, individuals with disabilities, and veterans.
